Andrew, in fact, was probably not paying a lot of attention to comics at all, because there was even a Blue Beetle day at the 1939 World's Fair, and both these boys are New Yorkers. Said day was aimed at kids, though, and they would have been teenagers.

Silver Age Blue Beetle sounds more interesting - he was an archaeologist who got his powers from an Egyptian scarab.
